Description from the publisher:
Egyptian Secrets, or White and Black Art for Man and Beast 1919
Attributed to Albertus Magnus, the Dominican philosopher who had nothing whatever to do with it, Egyptian Secrets is one of the most widely circulated and least respectable grimoires in the Western tradition — and one of the most genuinely used.
Its true ancestry lies in the German folk-magical compilations that passed hand to hand through Central Europe from the eighteenth century onward: household books of charms, blessings and remedies, worked by farmers, herdsmen and village practitioners on their own bodies, their families and above all their livestock. Carried to America by German-speaking emigrants, it settled into the powwow and braucherei practice of the Pennsylvania Dutch alongside Hohman's Long Lost Friend which we publish as The Long Hidden Friend", and by the early twentieth century the Chicago publisher de Laurence had made it a fixture of the American conjure catalogues, where it remains in use to this day.
This is not a book of abstract theory. It is a working manual. Its three volumes gather charms to stop blood and set fractures, to fix a thief in his tracks until he returns what he has taken, to make a man proof against shot and blade, to summon and mark the witch who has spoiled the milk, to quench a burning house, to compel the return of stolen goods, to discover treasure beneath the earth. Between them run the sympathetic remedies, the herb waters and salves, the SATOR square, the threefold repetition, the N. N. left blank for the sufferer's name.
Presented complete in three volumes as first issued, the text stands as a rare and unvarnished record of magic as it was actually practised — Christian, pragmatic, unbothered by the line between white art and black.
